Germans reach Outskirts of Stalingrad
On August 23, 1942, German Army captured city of Volga which is north of Stalingrad. Meanwhile, other units of the army reached the outskirts of Stalingrad along with the Luftwaffe which is the German Air Force. The Army and Air Force began heavily bombing the city. -
Ground Offense Starts
September 13, 1942 After the Strong bombardment days before, German troops have reached the actual city of Stalingrad and have started the ground offense with heavy armor and ground troops. -

October 14, 1942 The soviets have been fighting hard and have halted the Germans from advancing about a month after their ground assault started. This would last up until the 19th when the Germans are surrounded by Soviet troops. -

November 19, 1942 The Soviets decided to take an offensive role in the battle instead of deffensive. The offensive role was called Operation Uranus. The goal was to surround the Axis troops and destroy them. -
Operation Uranus Success
November 23, 1942 Four days after Operation Uranus started, the soviets completed what they set out to do. They surrounded 290,000 Axis troops. This is a major turning point for the Soviets in this battle. -

December 12, 1942 Field Marshal Von Manstein's army group launches an attack to relieve the 6th Army in Stalingrad thats had been surrounded by the Soviets in Operation Uranus. The German advance is halted by the Soviets. -
German Supply Airports Fall
January 21, 1943, German Forces are getting weaker by the day and to hurt that even more, the last of the airports held by the Germans fell to the Soviets, completely cutting the Germans off from supplies. -
Germans Surrender in Southern Sector
On January 31, With the supplies being cut off due to the fall of the airports, Von Paulus surrendered German forces in the southern sector. -
End of the Battle of Stalingrad
February 2, 1943 the remaining German troops surrendered. Only 90,000 German soldiers were still alive, and of these only 5,000 troops would survive the Soviet prisoner-of-war camps and make it back to Germany.
