START
People first started off by walking to their destination. For some people that would be a very long distance to walk. -

3100 BCE
The Boat
Then in 3100, Egyptians invented the sailing boat while the Romans were coming up with ways to build roads. -
17th and 18th Century
In the 17th and 18th century there were many new things added to transportation such as bicycles, trains, motor cars, trucks, airplanes, and trams. -
Hot air balloon and Hydrogen Balloon
In France the Montgolfier brothers invented the hot air balloon in 1783. The hydrogen balloon was also invented in 1783. -
Mid 19th Century
In the mid 19th century, transportation evolved into railways. Railways made travel much faster and also removed the danger of highwaymen. -
Steamships
By 1815 steamships were crossing the English Channel. The Savannah became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic in 1819. -
Horses Are Back!!
In 1829, horse drawn omnibuses began running in London. Also, in the 1860s and the 1870s, horse drawn trams began running in many towns. -
Traffic Lights
The first traffic lights were installed in London, 1868, by J.P. Knight. -
Benz, Daimler, and the Motorbike
Karl Benz and Gottleib Daimler made the first cars in 1885 and 1886. The motorbike was invented in 1885. -
First Electric Underground Train
The first electric underground train runs in London. -
Planes Carry Passengers
Planes started carrying passengers between London and Paris. -
