Modeling begins
Various inventors and entreprueners begin to formulate ideas modeling the railroad system. John Stevens builds a test track and runs a train around it. -
The Baltimore and Ohio railroad is opened
The B&O railroad was the first common carrier and class I railroad in the US. It extended as far as Sataten Island, NY and as far west as Illinois. Most surviving parts are owned by CSX Transportation. -
Idianaopolis Union Station is built
The Idianaopolis Union Station is the first "union" station in the world. It was opened by the Terre Haute & Richmond, Madison & Indianapolis, and Bellefontaine railroads. Amtrak still serves this staton today. -
George Pullman
George Pullman becomes well known for his luxury sleeping cars. As a result they named "pullman" cars in his honor. He also loaned one of his cars to house the coffin Abraham Lincoln after his assassination. -
Railroads adopt standard time zones
The new adoption of stndard time was not embraced in the beginning. The first man to realize the adoption was amateur astronomer, William Lambert. He proposed this plan to congress.
