With European countries trying to conquer many parts of the world, President James Monroe wrote the Monroe Doctrine. This states that the U.S can't be colonized by European powers. -
China and Britain clash in the Opium War
Britain tries to trade with China but Chinese traders do not want any of their products. The British decide to smuggle some addictive drugs known as Opium. Many of the Chinese become addicted and the British now have a product to trade. China wants the trading to stop but Britian refuses to do so. China declares war on Britain and gets destroyed by Britain's modernized army. -
Commodore Perry enters Tokyo Harbor
Commodore Perry enters Tokyo Harbor with a fleet of steamships. Their goal was to open up trade in Japan after many refusals. Perry's fleet scared the Japanese into accepting the command. The reply was called the Treaty of Kanagawa and it opened up two ports for the US. -
US wins Spanish American War
The US objected to the spanish brutatlity towards cubans. The US then decided to help cuba in a rebellion. Lasting for four months, the spanish military quickly collapsed and cuba became an independant country. Although cuba was independant, the US still ruled with a military government. The US got the last of spains colonies. -
Mexican Revolution Begins
Francisco Pancho Villa was a popular leader. He started the revolution in the north. He was a Robin Hood, taking money from the rich and giving to the poor. Emeliano Zapata also raised a powerful army. He wanted to retuen land to peasents. These two revolutionaries joined Venustiano to overthrow Huerta, the president. -
Panama Canal Opens
The US was given a ten mile zone to build a canal in Panama after helping panamanians break free from columbia. The next decade, american engineers were building a canal. First they had to kill all disease ridden insects. Soon all countries used the canal and America controlled the toll gate.
