Monroe Doctrine reflects special US interests in Americas
President James Monroe presented the Monroe Doctrine policy in 1823. The policy stated that if European nations tried to colinize in North or South America it would be an act of agression and the US would have to intervene. -
China and Britain clash in the Opium War
The Opium war started when british smugglers brought in opium into China in order to find a good that China would want to trade with. Opium though made some of the Chinese people heavy addicts. This caused many problems for the country so China wrote a letter to Queen Elizabeth asking for this to stop. She never replied so CHina declared war. -
Commodore Perry arrives in Tokyo bay,
Commodore Perry arrived in Tokyo with a few of his well armed war ships. These war ships amazed, as well as scared the Japanese people. Perry carried a letter from the president of the US which basically said please be our ally. Perry however threatened the people by saying that in 12 months he will come back with twice the amount of warships and is expecting an answer yes. -
US wins Spanish American War
In 1898, the US joined forces with Cuba against the Spanish which became known as the Spanish- American war. The US launched an attack on the Philippine islands, which Spain wasn't ready for. The Spanish quickly collapsed and lost. -
Mexican Revolution begins
The revolt was started by Francisco I Madero against autocrat Porfirio DIaz. The war lasted for about a decade. -
Panama Canal Opens
The Panamal canal was one of President Roosevelt's dreams. The canal was to serve as a faster way to cut through from the Atlantic ocean, to the Pacific ocean. The building of the canal took 34 years.
