The Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe doctrine was a formal way for President Monroe to push out all of the Europeans from south America and the western United States, as there was so much money to be made from the south american countries and he knew that if he didnt drive them out, there would be a war. (The mexican american war would still occur, but there probably would have been many more if he had not sent them out) -
The Opium War
After tens of throusands of Chinese had become addicted to opium smuggled in by the British, the Chinese people attempted an (unsuccessful) rebellion against their psychedelic opressors. After a crushing defeat against the British, the europeans noit only continued to bring opium into china, but they also gave themselves extraterratorial rights to do whatever they wanted. (including smuggling opium) -
Mexican American War
Mexico owned the land that is now texas, but didn't have a population sufficient enough to populate the large area, so they invited Anglos from the U.S. to inhabit the land. The new inhabitants, however, were not so keen on being a part of mexico and declare themselves independant. At which point, mexico sends troops led by Antionio Lopez De Santa Anna to texas (battle of the alamo) to frighten Texans into un-secedeing. That was, ultimately unsuccessful and texas was annexed by the U.S. -

The Meji Restoration
After the Togugawa shogunate surrendered power under commodor Perry, the Japanese realized that the only way they could defend themselves from outside powers was to modernize. The Meji Restoration is the expedited modernization of Japan, doing in only 50 years what it took nealry all other countries hundreds to do. -

The Sino-Japanese War was the struggle for the korean peninsula beween China and Japan in the late 19th century. -
The Spanish American War
To exploit the resources and potential bisunesses that could make money in Cuba, William Randall Hurst and Pullitzer used a tactic called "yellow journalism" to fabricate news stories in an attempt to foster tenstion between Spain and The U.S.
We then "liberated" cuba from Spain, one of the first notabler instances of the U.S. being the worlds mall cop. -
Russo Japanese War
After the Russians took over port arthur from china, the Japanese feared that they were next in line to be attacked, (and were looking to test their newly modernized military's might) and claimed that Russian troops had fired upon the Japanese to begin a war. After a few months of skirmishes, president Roosevelt brokered a peace treaty between the Japanese and the Russians, bu undermined the Japanese in the negotiations, leaving Japan to feel the icy embrace of vodka and and freedom. -

Mexican Revolution
After Benito Juarez was ousted from power by one of his former generals, Porfirio Diaz seized power from him and destroyed all of the reforms that Juarez implimented. Madero, Pancho Villa, and Emiliano Zapata sought to oust Diaz from power and began a war to restore a liberal leader to power. They would win the war, to have Victorio Huarta take power, leave power, Venusiano Carranza to be elected and institute reforms, get assasinated, followed by the PRI becoming dominant political party for th
