Executive Order 9981
Established By President Truman, this order anolished racial discrimination in the armed forces, which led to the end of segregation in the services. This was an important even in the Civil Rights Era because it made it possible for people of different races to fight for our contry and be considered as an equal individual. -
SNCC Founded
The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee was started when Ella Baker held a meeting in 1960. This Orginization helped raise funds to support work in the south. This orginization was impotant to the Civil Rights Era because the SNCC worked on projects in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Akansas, and Maryland, aiding to the freedom rides and sit-ins which helped add to the mass quantities that led to the Mach on Washington. -
George Wallace & the University of Alabama
"Stand At The Schoolhouse Door" took place in the Foster Auditorium of The University Of Alabama, where Gov. G.Wallace promised "Segragation now, Segregation tomorrow, and Segregation forever". G.Wallace stood at the door of the auditoruim and blocked entry to two black students. This event was important to the Civil Rights Era because it brought light on how deep this segregation was, and the lengths people took to stop them from equality. -
March On Washington
The March on Washington was the Largest nonviolent political march for Human Rights in US History. This march called for Civil and Economic rights for African Americans led by MLK, where his famous "I have a dream" speech took place. This Event was important to the Civil Rights Era because it proved to all the americans that these descriminated individuals could fight for their rights peacefully and united as one huge comunity. -
16th Street bombing
This Bombing was an act of terrorism done by the white man against an African American Church. This explosion killed four little African girls in the process. This event was important in the Civil Rights Era because it proved how much hate there was against African Americans that even in a place or worship their lives were at risk, this event also added the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
This Act Outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, of national origin, this also ended discrimination in schools, voter regestration, work place, and public acomidations. This was the most important event in the Civil Rights Era because it abolished every and all discrimination that opressed thousands of individuals through out the US and declared illegal, giving people a fighting chance to be equal in America. -
Voting Rights Act
This Act prohibited discrimination in voting. This Event was important to the Civil Rights Era because it allowed people of different races the ability to have a voice in the US. -
Executive Order 11246
Established by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965, this order abolished racial discrimination in the workforce and employment in the US. This was a very important even in the Civil Rights Era because it gave African American individals the chance work, and find jobs for a better future. -
Black Pantherns Founded
The Black Panther Party led by Huey P. Newton from 1966-1982. It was organization involved with Black Power and racial justice, who helped opressed individuals in need by providing breakfast for children, schools, medical institutuions, and many other programs for their community to grow. This Party was important to the Civil Rights Era because it's memebers were very violent and instead of gaining respect they demanded respect, showing a different side of the Civil Rights Era. -
MLK Assasination
MLK was the Leader of the African American Civil Rights Movenemt and a Hero to thousands of opressed African individuals. When he was assasinated in Memphis, TN, at the Lorra Motel many people lost hope. This was an important event in the Civil Rights Era because like many great hero's MLK left his legacy to be carried out by his people to bulid a greater nation for every race.
