First Public School Opened
The first Public High school opened in 1821 and was an English Classical School was opened with an enrollment of 101 boys. Women were not allowed in school at this time. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
The supreme court held up the constitutionality of segregation under the "separate but equal" doctrine. -
Brown v. Ferguson Ruling
Ended federal tolerance of racial segragation. "Separat but Equal" was deemed unconstitutional. -
Little Rock Nine
Segregation in public schools is unconstitutional; they integrated nine African American students. -
ACT First Administered
The ACT originally consisted of four tests: English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Natural Sciences.
It was first administered by Everett Franklin Lindquist. -
Title IX
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal Financial assistance." -
The Rehabilitation Act (504 Plans)
Section 504 Extended civil rights to people with disabilities; it's provided opportunities for children and adults with disabilities in education, employment, and various other settings. -
Congress Passes Education for All Handicapped Children Act
This act required all public schools accepting federal funding to provide equal access to education and one free meal a day. -
Congress Passed No Child Left Behind
Required states to develop assessments in basic skills. -
Common Core Implemented
Common Core was designed to establish consistent educational standards across the states as well as ensure students graduating from high school are prepared to go into college programs or the work force
