French Indian War
France and Great Britain were fighting in North America for control over the Ohio River Valley. The war lasted for 10 years and was incredibly expensive. Great Britain started to tax the colonists heavily to pay off the debt. This led to the first major disagreement between the colonists and the crown. -
The Stamp Act
The Stamp Act required colonists to pay a tax on every page of paper they printed on, including playing cards and dice. The act was set in place to pay for British troops that were stationed in the colonies while the seven years of war were going on. -
The Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre occurred on March 5h, 1770. What started as a street brawl on King Street between a lone British soldier and angry American colonists, quickly turned into a bloody and deadly riot. This happened due to the British trying to impose British tax laws on American colonists and The colonists rebelled against these laws stating "No taxation without representation" -
Boston tea party
The Boston Tea Party happened to protest the British parliament's tax on tea. A group of 30-130 men boarded all three vessels and over 3 hours, dumped all 342 chests of tea into the water. The British had responded harshly and considered protesting an act of treason. -
Intolerable Acts
The Coercive Acts, also known as the Intolerable Acts, were a series of four laws passed by the British parliament to punish the colony of Massachusetts Bay for the actions of the British Tea Party. These acts were unfair because they violated the colony's Natural rights, constitutional rights, and charter rights. This was a problem for Massachusetts Bay and all of America. -
Battle of Lexington & Concord
The Battle of Lexington & Concord was the first battle of the American Revolution. The British authority attempted to march into Lexington and Concord to reduce any possibility of rebellion by seizing the colonists' firearms, but it was late at night on April 18th, 1775. When Dr. Joseph Warren asked Paul Revere to deliver the news that the British were marching into the countryside. -
Declaration of Independence
The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. It was written to announce the formation of a new country and to form allies with foreign countries. The main purpose of the Declaration of Independence is written in the introductory sentence, to explain the colonists' right to revolution. -
Battle of Saratoga
During the second stage of the battle of Saratoga, on October 7th 1777. Burgoyne and his troops marched into the town of Saratoga established themselves again in hopes of escaping however Gates army had entrapped them, forcing them to surrender. The morale between American troops was high seeing as they had another American victory. -
Battle of Yorktown
With the help of the French army, navy, and Washington's forces beat Lord Charles Cornwallis' veteran army in Yorktown, Virginia the victory that led straight to the peace negotiations that ended the war and gave America its independence -
Treaty of Paris
The Treaty of Paris, by U.S. and British representatives was signed on September 3rd, 1783.
This treaty marked the end of the War of the American Revolution. It was an agreement that recognized U.S. independence and granted the U.S. western territories.
