    Scout learns a lesson about empathy
    Chapter 3 Pg. 39- "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." Scout doesn't want to go back to school beacuse she doesn't like her teachers rules. Atticus knows it's the law, and knows she needs to go. He tries to explain the theme empathy, so she understands where her teachers coming from.

    Chapter 7 pg. 77 "As Atticus had once advised me to do, I tried to climb into gems skin and walk around in it if: I had gone alone to the Radley place at two in the morning, my funeral would have been held the next afternoon. So I left Jem alone and tried not to bother him." Jem went back to the radley place to get his pants. Scout wanted to bug him, but realized using Atticus's advice that she should just leave him alone. This is relevant because it's the first time she tries out empathy

    Chapter 9 pg. 117 " I hope and pray I can get Jem and Scout through this without bitterness, and most of all, without catching Maycombs usual disease…. I just hope Jim and Scout come to me for their answers instead of listening to the town." Atticus wants his kids to understand why he's taking the case, and not turn against him because of the towns judging. This is important relevant to the theme because he wants his kid be empathetic towards him and understand his reasons.

    Chapter 10 pg. 131 " naw, scout it's something you wouldn't understand. Atticus is real old, but I wouldn't care if he couldn't do anything, I wouldn't care if he couldn't do a blessed thing." Scout wants to go boasting about Atticus's shot, but Jem understands that Atticus wouldn't want that. This is relevant to the theme because Jem is practicing empathy by understanding what Atticus would do.

    Chapter 11 pg. 139-140 " The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a persons conscience." Jem has has to go apologize to miss dubose for ruining her flowers. Meanwhile Atticus explains why everybody's opinion deserves respect. This is relative to the theme because Atticus is using empathy to understand miss dubose opinions.

    Chapter 15 pg. 205 "I go to school with Walter,… He's your boy, ain't he? Ain't he, sir?" This is where scout gets mr. Cunningham to break up the lynch mob. This is relevant to the theme Mr. Cunningham uses empathy to relate to Atticus as a father, when scout reminds him about Walter, that's why he broke up the mob.

    Chapter 16 pg. 210 " you children last night made Walter Cunningham stand in my shoes for a minute." This is where Atticus is explaining to the kids what made the lynch mob leave. This is relevant to the theme because Atticus shows scout how she made Walter Cunningham empathize with Atticus.

    Chapter 20 pg. 273 " and so a quiet, respectable, humble Negro who had the unmitigated temerity to 'feel sorry' for a white woman has had to put his word against two white peoples." This is when Atticus is giving his closing argument to the court room. This is relevant to the theme because feeling sorry for someone requires empathy, and understanding for other people's issues.

    Chapter 31 Pg. 374 " Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them." This is when scout looks through the window and understands how boo radley saw everything. This is relevant to the theme because scout literally sees from boo's perspective, and truly understands empathy.
