  • Growing up.

    Chalmer's was born in Bristol, England in 1939. He graduated in physics at the University of Bristol in 1961, and received an MSc at the University of Manchester in 1964.
  • Lectured in Philosophy

    Upon Graduating, Chalmers went to lecture from 1973 through 1999. He was a member of the Department of General Philosophy from 1972 to 1986, and from 1986 to 1999 was the head of the Department of the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Sydney, where he remains an honorary associate professor.
  • What Is This Thing Called Science?

    Author of one of the most popular and widely read introductions to our field. Translated into 19 languages and is now on it's third edition. The book he wrote is one of his biggest contributions today. In Alan Chalmers book, "What Is This Thing Called Science?", it goes over the different roles of observation, experimentation and theory in science. He argues that overserving is essential to science but it isn't enough. It then goes into talking about keeping an open mind when observing.
  • Recieved some awards.

    Chalmers was awarded a Centenary Medal by the Australian Government, on behalf of the Queen, for ‘Services to the Humanities in the area of History and Philosophy of Science’ in 2003.
