End of French and Indian war
The British won the war Because of the war, the British were in debt. They decided to start taxing the colonies to begin paying off the debt. -
Stamp act
The stamp act was a direct tax on things that were being printed like newspapers and legal documents. It was the first direct tax for the colonists. It mainly affected lawyers, merchants, printers, ministers, and in keepers. -
Quartering act
The colonists have to house soldiers. If there weren’t enough homes they could be in barns and inns. The colonist disliked the act because they had to pay for food for the soldier. -
Boston massacre
The colonists threw snowballs at the British soldiers. Someone yelled fire and the British soldiers started shooting. 5 of the colonists were killed. -
Battle of Lexington and concord
The British troops came to take the colonist's supplies and met a militia. No one knows who fired the first shot. This Battle started the revolutionary war. -
Declaration of independence
The colonists felt like they had the same rights as Britain even though the ocean separated them. Something that influenced the declaration was John Locke’s ideas of natural rights. The person that was given the task of writing the Declaration was Thomas Jefferson. The language of the first draft was harsh and a passage on slavery was excluded. -
valley forge
They stayed at valley forge until 06/18/1778. It was crowded and Washington's men were suffering from hunger and disease because they didn’t have the supplies they needed. When Baron von Steuben came he brought new things. He supplied them with the bayonet and made the manual for the military. -
Battle of Yorktown
The battle lasted until 10/19/1781. The French and American troops had 17,000 men while the British had 19,000. Because of disease half of the British troops couldn't fight because of malaria. General Cornwallis surrendered and ended the revolutionary war. -
Treaty of Paris
It took two years to write the treaty. Because of the treaty, The United States is an independent country. The western border of the United States was the Mississippi river. Spain also regained control of Florida
