Timeline of WW2

  • Germany invade Poland

    Germany invade Poland
This is a very important date because it is what sparked the beginning of WW2. Poland's allies, France and Brtiain, then declared war against Germany. I think it is important to know due to the fact that the invasion triggered the war.
  • Britain and France declare war on Germany

Britain and France declare war on Germany
Britain and France were allies with Poland and so as soon as Poland was invaded, they declared war on Germany. This is an important event in the European war as it is the official start of the war.
  • France surrenders to Germany

    France surrenders to Germany
Germany had invaded Paris and that is what lead to France agreeing on an armistace. It is interesting that not even a year into the war, one of the allies had already surrendered. I find this important because it shows how Germany had the upperhand and so far, were winning the war.
  • Germany invades Russia (Operation Barbarossa)

    Germany invades Russia (Operation Barbarossa)
This is quite an interesting time and what I consider very important due to the fact that Germany suffered and failed the operation even though they seemed so powerful earlier on. The Operation Barbarossa was a plan to invade Russia but Russia is very cold and they soon ran out of supplies (food, oil, clothes, men) through it. It was a horrible idea and started the downfall of Germany.
  • Japanese bomb the American fleet at Pearl Harbour

Japanese bomb the American fleet at Pearl Harbour
America and Japan had been on the verge of war for a long time and so the Peral Harbour bombing was what started the war. I think it's an important date to know just because this is what started the war througout the Pacific.
  • USA declares war on the axis powers

USA declares war on the axis powers
This would be the official beginning of the war throughout the Pacific. Only a day earlier, the USA's Pearl Harbour fleet had been bombed by the Japanese so the USA were now ready for war. This date is imporant becuase even though the bombing was what sparked it, this is the official commencement of war.
  • Japanese bomb Darwin (the first of 64 attacks)

Japanese bomb Darwin (the first of 64 attacks)
This is one of the most significant dates for Australia throughout the war because it was the largest single attack on Australia by a foreign power. This was unfortunately the beginning of another 64 attacks on Australia but it was the biggest. I think it's important to know just becuase we live in Australia and it's good to understand the history of our country to be aware and to be able to make good decisions in the future.
  • First Japanese defeat at the battle of Midway

First Japanese defeat at the battle of Midway
This was a crucial point in the Pacific war as America defeated Japan and moved into the offence position in war. It is said to be the most decisive point in war as Japan was now trying to get back up to the top postition of the war but were now on a downfall. I think it's a good date to know becuase Japan weren't doing any good for the country and this is when they were finally being beaten.
  • Period: to

Australians fight the Japanese along the Kokoda track, Papua, preventig them from taking Port Moresby

The Australians fought the Japanese on the Kokoda track to stop them from reaching the defence line, Port Moresby. If Japan had reached it, they would have been able to attack Australia. However, the Australians fought them and won. I think this is a very important date for Australia because due to hard work, the soldiers protected our country.
  • Germany lose the battle of Stalingrad to the USSR

Germany lose the battle of Stalingrad to the USSR
This is the turning point of the war throughout Europe as Germany were starting to lose the war. Hitler did not want the army to leave and kept persisting, however, they became trapped and lost the battle to the USSR. I think it's good to know becuase Germany were doing horrible things to so many people and it's nice to know they were being defeated.
  • Allied bombing of Dresden, Germany results in 100,000 casualties

Allied bombing of Dresden, Germany results in 100,000 casualties
This is when Germany started being attacked. Dresden, a capital city of a state in Germany was bombed by the allies, killing 100,000 people in Germany. I think it's an important date becuase you can start to realise that Germany isn't going to win this war and the allies are coming back and defeating them.
  • Allies enter Berlin and Hitler commits suicide

Allies enter Berlin and Hitler commits suicide
The allies had Germany's capital, Berlin, and this is very important as it signifies that Germany had lost the war. Hitler also commits murder along with his wife (married two days earlier). It's pretty ridiculous that he caused so much pain and suffering to the Jews, communists, etc. and then as soon as he loses, he kills himself. However, it is such a significant time because it signifies the end of a horrible dictator who led so many Germans into a life of racism.
  • The end of war in Europe

The end of war in Europe
I think this is one of the best and most important dates because it was the end of the war throughout Europe! It also signifies the end of a war that created so much pain, racism, suffering and hate.
  • Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
This is a really cool fact not only for the war, but this was the first deployed atomic bomb ever used. It was firstly dropped on Hiroshima and then Nagasaki. I find it a very important date because it is what caused Japan to surrender.
  • Japan unconditionally surrendered

    Japan unconditionally surrendered
This is an important time as this is the end of the war throughout the Pacific. Japan had to unconditionally surrender as the allies were threatning to completely destroy Japan's armed forces. I think this would definitely be one of the most important dates because it was the end of war!
