Ages 5-10
-Curious about everything and constantly wanting to investigate
-Fiercely independent and "knows it all"
-Begin to care about what others think of them
-Begin segregating playmates by gender (girls only play with girls, boys only play with boys)
-Friends become more important than mother, and thinks adults are stupid
-Overly sensitive to parents' approval or disapproval -
Ages 11-13
-Self-consciousness or embarassment caused by hormonal changes
-Become more self-centered and dramatic about their own lives
-Want to make their own decisions and choose their own friends
-Often embarassed by being seen with parents in public
-Pre-teens begin to think abstractly about non-tangible concepts, such as spirituality and trust
-May become moody or angry, or result in childish behavior due to insecurities -
Ages 14-18
-Do not like to be told when to go to bed
-Become more socially active, participating in sports, clubs, and dating, thereby affecting sleep cycles and eating habits
-Become more responsible for themselves: waking up, getting to and from school, driving, and working
-May develop body-image issues, becoming critical of every aspect of their bodies
-Given much of the responsibility of creating rules, consequences, and privileges for themselves
