    Bill Joy has copies sent out of the first Berkley Software Distribution (1BSD), which is Bell Labs' UNIX v6 with add-ons. This become a rival UNIX branch to AT&Ts UNIX.Link Text

    This was the last version of UNIX to come from Bell Labs. It was a multi-tasking and multi-user. This version included games such as chess, checkers, backgammon, and hangman.Link Text

    System V Interface Definition. This was an important effort in early regulation of UNIX during a time when UNIX variants were rapidly multiplying and portability was problematic. Around this time AT&T required compliance with SVID if vendor's were going to brand their products.Link Text

    UNIX clone MINIX was created
    Sun Microsystems, AT&T, and Bell Labs came together to produce a new system, that would be used to bring together two major UNIX branches. MINIX was then created by Andrew Tanenbaum. MINIX was a clone of UNIX which was used in science classrooms.Link Text

    Since AT&T and Sun developed a partnership, the rivals of UNIX formed the Open Source foundation to create new open standards. AT&T went on to create their own standard group called UNIX International.Link text

    The Sun microsystems announces Solaris with the public, which is another OS. This was inspired by the SVR4 as well as Linux Torvalds writing of Linux, which was an OS inspired MINIX.Link text

    The rights to UNIX are sold
    AT&T sells its subsidiary UNIX System labs and UNIX rights to Novell. Later in the year Novell transfers the UNIX trademark to the X/open group.Link text
