Timeline of the Revolutionary War

  • 1754-1763 French and Indian War

    This was the American phase of the 9 year war. Because of this war, France gave all of its North American possessions east of the Mississippi River to Britain. Due to the cost of the war British government imposed new taxes on its American colonies. The Treaty of Paris ended this war.
  • The Sugar Act

    This was a tax passed to pay for the Seven Years War. It taxed sugar and lowered taxes on molasses in British colonies in America and the West Indies. This restricted smuggling which was important at this time. It was one of the first taxes that led to protests. In 1766, they got rid of it.
  • Stamp Act

    NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION! This was important. The government of Great Britain needed money to pay for the Seven Years War. They decided to require stamps on all paper goods. People could not afford this. They created the Stamp Act Congress. Colonies sent individuals to NYC for a special meeting. They demanded the law be repealed.They sent the petition to Parliament in England. This was important because it showed the colonies could and would speak as one.
  • March 5, 1770 Boston Massacre

    Due to tension relations between civilians and the British soldiers, a mob formed around a British sentry on King Street in Boston. He was verbally abused. He then had 8 additional soldiers come to his aide. They were attacked with clubs, stones and snowballs. Without orders, they fired into the crowd. Killing 3 on scene and 2 died later. This was a significant event because it turned colonial sentiment against King George III and British Parliamentary.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    This was a political protest. American colonists that were angry over the taxation without representation dumped 342 chests of British tea into the Harbor.This was the first real acting out from the colonists. It showed Great Britain that Americans were not just going to take the taxation and tyranny without a fight. American patriots from the thirteen colonies to fight for independence. This was huge during this time.
  • Paul Revere's Ride

    The British were stationed in Boston and were rumored to be moving in on the leaders of the Sons of Liberty and American Patriots.Sons of Liberty were watching the British closely so they could warn the colonists if they started an attack. Revere set out to warn Adams and Hancock.He made it.They rode toward Concord to warn the militia but was detained by the British.He escaped.This was important because he was able to give warning to the colonists and militia and prepare them to fight.
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord

    These battles were the first military engagements of the American Revolutionary War. The reason for the war is because the British commander in Boston heard supplies of powder and weapons were being kept by patriots. They were being kept in the towns of Lexington and Concord. There is no proof of which side fired first.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Bunker Hill is close and was the objective of both colonial and British troops.The Americans heard the British were sending troops from the city to occupy the unoccupied hills .1200 colonial troops were sent quickly to Bunker Hill & Breed's Hill.The British were alerted and mounted an attack.British won the battle.This was seen as a victory.They had losses but fewer casualties then the British. It showed that inexperienced colonial troops were willing to stand up to regular troops.
  • Battle of Princeton

    This battle was after the Battle of Trenton in which George Washington had a surprise victory over the British.They then advanced to Princeton.There they defeated a small British force. A larger force was alerted & went after them.The Continental Army was able to burn bridges behind them. The battle resulted in 200 British deaths and 300 captured or injured. The Americans had minimal loss. This was huge form them and boosted their morale which was important for the war.
  • Treaty of Paris

    This treaty was drafted 11/30/1782 and signed on 9/3/1783. The treaty was signed in Paris by representatives of King George III of Great Britain. Also, representatives of United States of America signed as well. This was important because it ended the Revolutionary War. It set boundaries between the British Empire in North America and the US. Fishing rights and restoration of property and prisoners of war were all in the treaty.
