Timeline of The Kite Runner

  • Birthdays

    Hassan was born in the Winter of 1964. Almost exactly a year later Amir was born. Though his mother strived through the delivery, she passed hours after he was born. An event Amir could never bring himself to forgive.
  • Baba's Orphanage is built and Opened

    This event shows us how giving Baba is and helps with character development. Baba is a very selfless person and is willing to lose money for kids he does not know. Amir is jealous of the attention the Orphans are receiving from Baba thus, making him resentful.
  • Shift of Power

    The government of Afghanistan was forever changed. King Zahir Shah leaves theThe government of Afghanistan was forever changed. King Zahir Shah leaves the country and his cousin Daoud Khan takes the power. This type of government has everybody paranoid and on edge. He's behind all the corruption in the country and forces families to split up and move away. country and his cousin Dahoud Khan takes the power.
  • Coldest winter

    Though the climate may not have been the coldest in the winter of 1975, Amir sure was. He pushed Hassan away in hopes that Amir would not have to deal with the repercussions of what had happened to Hassan. Amir couldn't come to terms with himself about Assef raping Hassan so he thought pushing Hassan away and pretending it didn't happen would fix it. (SPOILERS: it didn't)
  • New Servants?

    Amir challenges Baba and tries to ask him to get new servants. As you can imagine, Baba was furious and lashed out on Amir. Ali, Hassan's father, and Baba have been childhood friends since forever and Baba is quite offended when Amir questions him. Once again we see how loyal and respectful Baba is and sees Ali and Hassan as his equals. Whereas Amir will always think of Hassan as lesser than him.
  • Summer of '76

    Amir is turning 13 so Baba is throwing him a huge celebration party. His relationship with Hassan became practically nonexistent, while his relationship with Baba grew stronger. Assef show's up to his party because Baba invited his father. Assef is an idiot and brought him and present to prove a point, an autobiography of Hitler.
  • Summer cont'ed

    Amir hides a watch he got for his birthday under Hassan's pillow trying to frame him. Hassan admits to stealing the watch which he did not steal.
  • Coup d'Etat

    The Russian troops are making Afghanistan into a completely different country and they don't care who gets hurt. This whole ordeal starts with a coup d'etat.
  • Russia moves in

    Russian tanks move into Afghanistan and start to destroy the country that Amir knew. Amir and Baba are forced to leave Afghanistan illegally.
  • America

    They arrive in America and start their new lives. Baba gets a job at a gas station and works unbelievable hours. They have a van and they go around to garage sales and buy things to sell at the flea market to make extra money while Amir is going to school.
  • Graduation

    Amir graduates from high school at the age of 20 and that is the kick start to his entire future. He wonders if Hassan is educated, or even alive.
  • There's Something There That Wasn't There Before

    Amir is introduced to his future wife Saraya. He does everything in his power to visit her stand at the flea market while trying to avoid the General
  • Cancer

    Baba is diagnosed with cancer. After a very long process of finding a doctor who wasn't russian. Baba is still holding onto that grudge.
  • So Much So Fast

    With Baba deteriorating, they rushed Soraya and Amir's wedding so Baba could be there. He was so happy seeing his son get married it took the pain away. He died the night after their wedding
  • Russians Leave Afghanistan

    This is a huge win for the Afghan people. The invaders who are trying to take their country away have fled leaving the Afghan people independent.
  • The Beginning of the End

    Amir receives a telephone call from Rahim Khan asking him to come back to his country. This is important because, without Rahim Khan, Amir would've never known the truth about his family or been able to reconcile with himself about leaving Afghanistan.
  • The Return

    Amir returns to Iran then Afghanistan by the request of Rahim. They have a lengthy conversation and Ami finds out Hassan was his half-brother and Hassan's son is alive.
  • Happily Ever After

    Soraya picks the boys up from the airport after a very emotionally dragging trip. Sorab is still very unstable and becomes mute. As time goes on his relationship with Amir and Soraya grows stronger and they legally adopt him. Amir shows Sorab how to fly kites like him and his father used to and Sorab is naturally good at it. They share stories and laugh together. Sorab finally finds himself and grows as an individual.
  • Period: to

    It Actually Gets Worse...

    Amir tries to save Sohrab from the Taliban. He almost dies in the process but he saves Sohrab. He is able to smuggle him to Iran where it is safe for the time being. The Taliban is looking for Amir so they can't stay long. Amir struggles with Sohrab's visa to get into America. Amir tells him he might have to take Sohrab to an orphanage until they can obtain legal documents. Sorab freaks out because Amir said he would never go back to that place. Sohrab's tries to kill himself but Amir finds him.
