Timeline of the interwar years

  • Versailles Treaty

    Versailles Treaty
    This treaty was the document that was imposed on the loser of WWI, Germany. The treaty caused Germany to lose land, troops, and money in very large amounts. Germany's economy was crippled and it took a very long time to recover from the war with these burdens. Meanwhile, Britain, France,and the United States savored their mini victory of greatly lowering Germany's chances of starting another major war.
  • League of Nations

    League of Nations
    This group is the World's first form of international security. Although appealing to many nations, the United States does not join and Germany and the Soviet Russia are not admitted into the group. This was some country's way of trying to prevent another major war that affected the world in a major way.

    Communists International

    the Comintern,a communist group, makes a breakthrough in their power and is able to spread Communism to almost every country in Europe by splitting most European socialist parties.
  • Fascism in Italy

    Fascism in Italy
    Mussolini becomes Prime Minister of Italy. Although he doesn't have full control until several years later, he is able to enforce a tough and fascist government in Italy that is different then most in Europe. Mussolini lead with a very strict mindset that was unappealing to many but had an effective result for Italy.

    Hopeful Years

    This was an era of comfort and hope for most European countries. European countries have good international relationships and ease reparations. Germany was accepted into the League of Nations.
  • Stalin in Power in Russia

    Stalin in Power in Russia
    After Lenin's death, Stalin has complete control over the Soviet Union. Stalin becomes very suspicious towards all groups and people other than himself. This lead to his very tight hold over foreign communist parties, brutal police repressions, forced industrialization, and purges.
  • Japan invades Manchuria

    Japan invades Manchuria
    Japan opens an undeclared war against China in Manchuria. The war is long and is disheartening, especially when the League of Nations attempt to subdue the fighting and fail. This was proof that the attempt at keeping peace internationally was not actually going to work.
  • Germany starts to distance itself from the rest of Europe

    Germany starts to distance itself from the rest of Europe
    Germany decided to withdraw from the League of Nations and the Disarmament Conference, distancing itself from the countries that wanted peace and no war.
  • Third Reich

    Third Reich
    This was Germany's third empire, lead by Hitler and the Nazis. Hitler was the Chancellor of Germany and the Nazis gained complete control in a matter of months.
