James Cook claims Australia for the British

Aug 22, 1770

In fact, in August the 22th 1770 the captain Cook take possession of the east coast of Australia, giving it the nam of New South Wales

First colony built in Sydney Cove

In 1788, British colonization began with the foundation of a prison camp in Sydney.

First Fleet

1790

First free settlers arrive for a new life in Australia:
450 sailors and their families as well as 714 prisoners have settled in New South Wales. The first fleet consisted of 11 ships, the majority of them were British but a few detainees were African, French and American.
