Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie Chotek, are assassinated by a 19 year old man named Gavrilo Princip. The reason behind the killing of Ferdinand and his wife was to expand Austria-Hungary’s provinces to form what will become Greater Serbia or Yugoslavia. Timeline of World War I
World War I was one of the largest and deadliest wars in history, as well as a significant turning point. The Big Four (Britain, France, the United States, and Italy) emerged and pushed their terms on the defeated powers. As a result, the Austro-Hungarian, German, Ottoman, and Russian Empires ceased to exist and new states were created. Even though the Allied victory should have prevented future wars, World War II followed twenty years later. -

British ocean liner is torpedoed

Tsar Nicholas II abdicates the throne
Tsar Nicholas II steps down from the throne after a string of riots in the Russian capital. The Russian Revolution takes control of the Romanov dynasty which lead to the rise of Vladimir Lenin. The United States declares war on Germany
The German Foreign Minister sent the Zimmermann Telegram asking Mexico to join the war as their ally against the United States. The UK intercepted it and President Wilson released the Zimmermann Telegram to the public. After that and the sinking of seven US merchant ships, Wilson declared war on Germany. A British offensive at Cambrai
The British offensive at Cambrai in France is the first use of large scale tanks in combat. The tanks surprised the Germans and took 7,500 prisoners in casualties. Bad weather hit and they did not have the reinforcements to be successful. Within two weeks, the British are pushed back to their original position. Germany and the Allies conclude an armistice
With 72 hours to agree to Allied demands, Germany signs the armistice at Compiègne, ending World War I. The ceasefire comes into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918.
