Timeline of the Big Bang

  • 130,000 BCE

Big Bang Happened 13.8B years ago

The universe is expanding, so all the galaxies are moving apart from each other, and if you extrapolate this backwards they all meet at a point 13.8 billion years ago.
  • 1540

    Prediction of Earths Age

John Calvin a humanist lived in France speculated the earth was ancient because of how long it took to cool. He predicted this in the sixteenth century
  • Darwin's Theory on Earths Age

Darwin's theory stated that the earth was at least a couple of million years old. This theory is what kept most scientists content in the late nineteenth and early twentieth Century. He proved this by saying the molten melted in the earth's core took millions of years to cool .
  • Einstein’s theory of relativity

    Einstein’s theory of relativity
Einstein’s theory of relativity: This theory states that Gravity not a a force, but as a consequence of the curvature of spacetime caused by the uneven distribution of mass. This theory was to prove that space was relative and the universe was static but the equation backs up the claim that everything is expanding.
  • Galaxies Speeding Away From Us

Vesto Slipher looked at the spiral nebula and it's characteristics in 1912. In 1917 he found that all of galaxies were red shifted meaning they were speeding away from us
  • Expanding Universe Model

Belgian Catholic priest Georges Lemaître proposed an expanding model for the universe to explain the observed red shifts of spiral nebulae, and calculated the Hubble law. He based his theory on the work of Einstein and De Sitter, and independently derived Friedmann's equations for an expanding universe.
  • Red-Shifts in Galaxies

Edmund Hubble and Milton Hudson viewed variable stars in the androgen galaxy. They were able to understand the distance of the galaxies. When they compared distances to the red-shifts Slipher observed, they found that the farther away the galaxy was, the faster it was moving away from us
  • Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation

    Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation
Aron Perez and Robert Wilson discovered that The light emitted during this process, which has since stretched into microwaves, is the earliest known object researchers can study directly. Known as the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, many researchers consider it the strongest evidence for the Big Bang
  • New Elements

George Gamow hypothesized that subatomic molecules fused together to create new elements. This was done when the universe cooled enough for subatomic particles to fuse together.
  • Steady-State Theory

    Steady-State Theory
Steady-state theory, in cosmology, a view that the universe is always expanding but maintaining a constant average density, with matter being continuously created to form new stars and galaxies at the same rate that old ones become unobservable as a consequence of their increasing distance and velocity of recession
  • Big Bang Became a Widespread Name

Fred Hoyle used the term Big Bang on a radio show and in a widely read magazine.
  • Background Noise in the Universe.

Radio astronomers created a signal in their radio telescope that found background noise inside the universe.
  • The Big Bounce Theory

    The Big Bounce Theory
The big bounce theory. It was originally suggested as a phase of the cyclic model or oscillatory universe interpretation of the Big Bang, where the first cosmological event was the result of the collapse of a previous universe.
  • First Tremors of the Big Bang

First Tremors of the Big Bang
Inside that microwave cloud, scientists have, for the first time, found gravitational waves like shock waves– confirming there was a big bang. “They’re sometimes called the first tremors of the big bang, and they do arise at what’s believed to be the first instance of the expansion of the universe,” said Dr. John Kovak, Harvard University.
  • Observations of Red Light Waves

Satellite observations refined their observations that red light waves have been traveling through spaces since the Big Bang
