    Portuguese and the Arabs were the first to take the Africans and use them as slaves.

    Slavery in America eventually caused a civil war in 1861. The war was between the northeast and south-east side of America. The northeast side of America was against slavery. Slavery in America only happened on the south side of America. There were no slaves in the north side. Abraham Lincoln helped put a stop to slavery because he was the president at the time.

He travelled further north and found a natural harbour.18 years later, Captain James Cook led the First Fleet and arrived at that exact harbour. He travelled north of New South Wales and hoisted the Union Jack. He declared the whole eastern side of Austalia to be British territory.

    Australia became a nation in 1901 January the 1st. Sir Edmund Barton (our first Prime Minister) and the federal ministers took the oath of office. Before Australia was a nation, it was six different British colonies. Each colony sent a representative to agree on how to form a new federation. The people of these colonies voted to accept this new Australian Constitution, and in 1900 it was then passed as British act of Parliment.
