ANTIQUITY
Singapore originally only had one ethnicity, one language, and 2 religions. The only ethnicity in Singapore was Malay. and were called *Orang Luat( Malay for “Sea people”). They spoke Tai-Kadai and practiced ancestor *veneration( Kept people in order as to not bring dishonor to their family), and *Shamanism( The belief that a select few people in the society can communicate with spirits). -
exposure to China
Chinese traders started trading in Singapore starting in 1819. This brought the Chinese *ethnicity, *language, and *religion. Some Chinese people decided to settle down in Singapore, bringing these to the country. -
exposure to India
Indian traders started trading in Singapore in 1819. They brought *Tamil( an Indian language), the religion *Buddhism. Like China, Indians settled down in Singapore, bringing these religions, ethnicities, and languages. India traded Indian *vessels(ships) in 1819. -
British takeover
In 1867, the British took over Singapore. This brought English ethnicities, the English language, and *Christianity. The British used this country as a military base during war. -
Today
Today, Singapore has many ethnicities, 4 prominent religions, and 4 national languages. Singapore has many different religions, the most prominent being *Buddhism, *Islam, *Christianity, and *Chinese. The most prominent languages are *Tamil( An Indian language), English, Chinese, and Malay. The major ethnicities are Chinese, Indian, and Malay. Chinese people take up ¾ of the population in Singapore.
