Timeline of Revenue Acts

  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act
The Sugar Act was intended to raise money for Great Britian. The colonists had to pay 3 pence per pound of sugar. The colonists disliked the act a lot and came up with the catchphrase "No taxation without representation." The British decided to make more taxes on the colonies. ([Vector Sugar], 2021)

  • The Currency Act

    The Currency Act
The Currency Act was intended to ban new issues of paper currency in the colonies. The British wanted the colonies to pay in whatever currency they wanted. It created a cash crisis in most of the colonies. After some time, the British gave in and allowed the colonists to pay in their currency to pay back debt. ([Currency Act], 2014)

  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was intended to raise money for Great Britian. For any documents, the colonists had to pay for a stamp issued by the British Parliament. The colonists did not like the act and protested. British merchants were also affected by this, because their exports were threatened. ([The Stamp Act], 2016)

    The Townshend Acts
The Townshend Acts were intended to raise money, enforcing compliance with trading, punishing New York, and establishing that Britian had the right to tax the colonies. Many colonies created boycotts to uprise against the acts. People in Britian were in unrest and soldiers were sent to deal with any potential uprisings. ([Townshend Acts], 2012)

  • The Tea Act

    The Tea Act
The Tea Act was intended to help the East India Company sell their tea that was sitting in London warehouses. The colonists did not want to partake in the act. On December 16, 1773, the colonists dumped loads of tea into the sea after being delivered it. The British responded by being harsh to the colonists, which ultimately lead to the war two years later.
