Timeline of Revenue Acts

  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
Taxed the colonists 3 pints for a pound of sugar. This angered the colonists only because they didn't have a say in this tax, "Taxation without representation" The British thought it was only fair that they pay taxes to help pay for the war that Britain helped with.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
Colonists were enforced to get stamps on paper materials (besides books) including certificates of land, newspapers, and even playing cards. The colonists were really upset by this because this was paying for the British soldiers that were in their homes and they didn't want them there anyway. They revolted by burning stamps, hanging a stamp agent, tar and feathering another and burning British representatives' houses. This act was revoked by the British parliament.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
The colonists had to house the soldiers that were there from the French and Indian war. This upset the colonists deeply and resulted in the Boston Massacre and other events. Again Parliament thought it was only fair since they helped the colonies with the war.
  • Townsend Acts

    Townsend Acts
The Townsend Acts included a series of Acts that were passed concerning the British imported goods.
  • The Declaratory Act

    The Declaratory Act
This act made it so the colonists had to obey any other acts the British passed (Parliament Taking All My Dough). Colonists were too distracted to really directly react to this act but parliament thought it was very clever.
