First telephone line was constructed
In 1877-78, the first telephone line was constructed, the first switchboard was created and the first telephone exchange was in operation. Three years later, almost 49,000 telephones were in use. -
The idea of telephones started to spread
By 1900 there were nearly 600,000 phones in Bell's telephone system; that number shot up to 2.2 million phones by 1905, and 5.8 million by 1910. As the years came, more and more phones were being used. For example, by the 1960's, there were more than 80 million phone hookups in the U.S. and 160 million in the world; by 1980, there were more than 175 million telephone subscriber lines in the U.S. -
Very first radio-telephone in a vehicle
As the years passed, more modifications were made to the basic phone, including the development of the car phone. The car phone was a mobile radio telephone specifically designed for and fitted into an automobile. This service originated with the Bell System, and was first used in St. Louis on June 17, 1946. -
Radiotelephone in vehicles were introduced
This is the first radiotelephone equipment to allow phone calls to-and-from vehicles to be relayed completely unattended through local telephone companies. -
First hand-held mobile phone prototype
