Joseph Henry and Edward Davey had both independently devised a foundation for the invention of the telegraph. The telegraph is a device where a signal would be transmitted along a wire to the receiving end. -
Morse Code
The Morse Code was invented by Samuel Morse. It is a series of on-off lights, tones, clicks, taps, etc., represented by dots and dashes (called dits and dahs) on paper. A certain letter is represented by a certain order of dots/dashes, and a skilled listener will be able to 'translate' the signals into words. -
Telephone
Alexander Graham Bell is credited for the creation of the first practical telephone, but it was actually Antonio Meucci who first came up with the idea of the 'talking telegraph'. It is rumoured that the two men went to the Patent Office for the telephone on the same day. -
Photophone
Photophony was invented at around 1880. It is a device that uses light beams to transmit a message. -
Radio transmission
In 1887, Heinrich Hertz discovered the existence of radio waves, and in 1894, Guglielmo Marconi developed the first practical 'wireless telegraph', taking advantage of radio waves. -
Videotelephony
In the late 1870s, the concept of videotelephony spreaded in Europe and the USA. It is the concept of the addition of live video to voice telecommunication. However, it wasn't until 1925 when the video technology was really starting to improve, therefore improving the technology of videotelephony. -
Satellite
The satellite was used to relay and amplify radio communications using transponders. They get a signal, which is then relayed to its final destination or another intermediate station. The first satellite in the USA was used when President Eisenhower sent to the world a Christmas greeting. -
World Wide Web
Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web (abbreviated as WWW), in 1989 while under employment for CERN, European Organisation for Nuclear Research. -
Smartphone
The IBM Simon was the first smartphone, created in 1994. -
Google
In 1998, Sergey Brin and Larry Page created Google, one of the most widely used search engines.
