    Four black students sat down at an all-white diner where a waitress refused to serve them. In response, they sat there until closing time and promised to keep doing the sit-in. More and more people got involved as well.

    King is assassinated by James Earl Ray in Memphis, Tennessee. He was later arrested and convicted for his murder.
