HMS Beagle Voyage
In December of 1831, Charles Darwin set sail aboard the HMS Beagle. During this time Darwin was employed as a naturalist, and was spending time collecting animal, fossil, and plant samples.
Darwin visited the Galapagos Islands, making many biological observations of the flora and fauna located within the archipelago. References:

Darwin's Contributions to Philosophy
Darwin brought forth a major change in scientific philosophy, shifting the paradigm of how species developed with his discoveries and research regarding the evolution of animals, plants, and ultimately human life. This theory of evolution was never hypothesized before, and completely revolutionized biological research.
