  • The First Fleet Arrived

    The First Fleet Arrived
    The First Fleet arrival was when the First Fleet (a group of 11 ships named Alexander, Charlotte, Friendship, Lady Penrhyn, Prince of Wales, HMS Sirius, HMS Supply, Borrowdale, Fishburn and Golden Grove) landed on the shores of Sydney Cove. When they arrived, many convicts, marines and the captain departed, landing on a very foreign land that they haven't explored before. Most of the passengers aboard the First Fleet were convicts, sentenced to the punishment of transportation.

    Bennelong and Phillip Met
    This marked the friendship between the European settlers and the Indigenous peoples. Bennelong and Phillip were what we would call "best mates" and served as a bridge between the two groups. Their tale was quite an amazing one. Governor Phillip intended to make friends with the Indigenous and communicate with them, allowing him to trade between the two peoples. To do this, Phillip decided to kidnap two people and force them to be a bridge between the two communities. One of the was Bennelong.

    During this time period, Indigenous children were forcefully taken from their homes and forced to "assimilate" into white culture. They were often treated brutally in the care home they were sent to and they were restricted from speaking their native language or following their culture. They were given to white families who needed workers so after the children finished school at 14 years of age, they were sent to work.

    This is the day that the citizens of Australia first celebrated Australia day. This day was used to celebrated the day that the First Fleet arrived on the shores of Sydney Cove.

The speech aimed to make amends between the Indigenous and the settlers by saying sorry to all the misdeeds of the early European settlers and the discrimination against the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Thanks to this day, every year, Australia has a Sorry Day, which marks this event.
