    Proclamation of 1763
    Poorly received, banned colonists from settling west of the Appalachian mountains, the British thought it had been successful but they did not know it would lead to the independence movement.
  • Sugar Act of 1764

    Sugar Act of 1764
    Charged 3 pence per lb of sugar, Americans rebelled and reacted angrily, the British gov reacted by enforcing more strict policies.
  • Stamp Act 1765

    Stamp Act 1765
    Stamps had to be purchased and placed on all important documents. Americans were not happy, ships were met with mobs who destroyed the ships and resisted the act in general. The stamp act was removed by the British in 1766. This led to the creation of the sons of liberty.
  • Quartering Act of 1765

    Quartering Act of 1765
    Great Britain would house its soldiers in American barracks and public houses. Widespread evasion and disregard for the law occurred in almost all the colonies. Colonies disputed the legality of this act. The British government reacted by amending it in 1774 with Intolerable Acts
  • Townshend Acts of 1767

    Townshend Acts of 1767
    Named after Charles Townshend, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, these acts imposed duties on imported goods such as tea, glass, and paper. Unlike the Stamp Act, which was a direct tax, these were indirect taxes on imported goods. They were seen as a way for Britain to exert control and raise revenue without colonial consent, leading to renewed tensions and protests in the colonies.
