His parents were Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. and Rose Fitzgerald. The couple had nine children. John was the second of them.
During his first ten years of life, he lived in Brookline. He attended Edward Devotion School from kindergarten through the beginning of the third grade. During the fourth grade he attended a private school for men called Noble and Greenough, which was later renamed the Dexter School. -
