Captain Cook and his crew landed in Botany Bay on Australia's east coast. After a week of sailing and exploring the new land, they returned to England to announce their discovery and claim the land. It wasn't for another 18 years that the First Fleet arrived. -

The decleration of Independence was a statement that announced that the states of America were independent, and no longer part of England. This was officialy passed on this day and the USA was officially recognised as a country, America and Britain had previously been at war. -

11 ships with convicts sailing from England arrived in Botany Bay, Australia, becoming the first settlers to arrive in Australia. The journey took about 250 days. Australia was first colonised with convicts from England, they continiued to be transported to Australia for 80 years. -

The French revolution outbroke due to high bread proces and dissatisfaction with the ruling aristocrats who levied high taxes to support the rich peoples lifestyles. The revolution lasted until 1799, and saw the decline of power in the monarchs and the rich and distributed more even rights across the people. -

The first ever railway was the Liverpool- Manchester railway in Engaland and it opened on this day after 3 years of construction. This was the beginning of one of the worlds most used forms of transport. -

Gold was discovered by Edward Hargraves in Ophir, near Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. This sparked the Australian Gold Rush that lasted for 5 years. -

Eureka Stockade
The Eureka Stockade was the golddiggers rebellion in Ballarat against the governments miner's licence fees. 500 diggers attacked a police stockade resulting in a battle that killed 27 diggers. It was a key event in the begining of Australian democracy. -
First ever test cricket match between Australia and England is played
On this day the first recognised international cricket match was the 5 day test between Asutralia and England at the MCG, which was the foundation to The Ashes. Australia won by 45 runs and opening batsmen Charles Bannerman made the first century, scoring 165 of Australia's 245 runs in the 1st innings. -
Karl Benz creates the world's first automobile
Benz patented the internal combustion engine, and in 1886 created the first powered car, creating the birth of the automibile. It was called the Motorwagen, and was fuelled by gas. In 1887 he created the Motorwagen 2, and began to sell them in 1888, establishing Mercedes-Benz. -
Federation Of Australia
Australia's federation saw Australia's colonies come together and become an independent country. Australia's constitution was created and Australia's first Prime Minister, Edmund Barton was sworn in. Australia also now had its own Parliment and Government, based in Melbourne, which was the original cpaital of Australia. -
Wright Brothers' first flight
Orville and Wilbur Wright, aka the Wright brothers were the inventors of the aeroplane and were the fist to test it out. On 17 Decenber 1903 avation history begun when they controlled the first powered flight, at Kitty Hawk, USA. -
Titanic sinks
At the time the Titanic was the worlds biggest pasenger ship, and deemed 'unsinkable'. It was sailing on its maiden voyage and carrying 2,224 passengers. At about 11:30pm on April 14 the ship hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic ocean. It split open the front half of the starboard before it sank completely at 2:20 am on April 15. 1,517 of the passsengers on board died, and it remains one of the deadliest cruisline disatsers in history, -
