    Charles Darwin was born in a country town called Shrewsbury. It was close to the border between Wales and England. He was born into a very wealthy family and a large house. Poverty was never an issue for his family and it wouldn't be a problem for Darwin in the rest of his life. This was the same day Abraham Lincoln was born and both were very influential in their lives (Karp).

    US Declares War on Britain
    Once the Senate and the House both voted on the war, President Madison signed the declaration into law. The Americans felt it was necessary for this because of the British economic blockade with France, impressment of American sailors, and the British support to the hostile Indian tribes. Many wars were fought and it seemed like the British were going to come out victorious. The tides of the war changed and it ultimately ended the war (War).

    The Treaty of Ghent was signed and in the agreement it said all conquered lands would be returned to the Americans. It also said that a commission would establish a boundary between the US and Canada.This showed the whole world the power that the Americans had and that they really can stick up for themselves (War).

    Missouri Compromise (Continued)
    The second was that slavery was prohibited from the Louisiana Purchase lands north of latitude 36 degrees 30', except for Missouri. Some citizens were upset while others were happy. Either way this was the best way to settle the dispute (Missouri).

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was an attempt to make Americans happy and also add new states to the country. There was a request for a new state,but there were 22 states that were divided between slave states and free states. Adding another state would upset the balance, so the legislative branch came up with 2 provisions of the Compromise. The first was that Missouri became a slave state and Maine became its own free state (Missouri).

    Monroe Doctrine (Continued)
    The last point was any European power that tried to control any western hemisphere nation would be seen as an attack on the US. This was another example of the US asserting its power in the world and showing that no one will control them (Monroe).

    Monroe Doctrine
    The Monroe Doctrine was addressed by president James Monroe and delivered to Congress during his annual message. It declared that the Old World and New World had to remain in different hemispheres. There were 4 basic points made in the doctrine.The first was that the US would stay out of European conflict. The second was the US would not interfere with any of the new colonies in its western hemisphere. The third point made was the western hemisphere wasn't open to anymore colonization (Monroe).

    Enrollment in Edinburgh University
    Darwin enrolled at Edinburgh University at the age of 16 along with his brother. He began to study medicine when he first enrolled.His grandfather and father both studied medicine, so Charles did too. Edinburgh provided the best medicine education in Europe, but Darwin didn't medicine. He realized that medicine wasn't the right pathway for him in life even though it may have been for his father and grandfather. After 2 years, Darwin left Edinburgh University without graduating (Biography).

    Became Student at Christ's College
    Darwin studied to become a clergyman and later earned his bachelor's degree in theology.That wasn't the most important thing that happened to Charles Darwin at Christ's College. Darwin met one of the most influential people in his life. A professor named John Henslow became a person that was close with Darwin. Without meeting Henslow, he wouldn't of been recommended for the 1831 voyage. This was a very important event in his life and it is because of his time at Christ's College (Biography).

    Probably the most important event of Charles Darwin's life was his 5 year voyage on the H.M.S. Beagle. He was a naturalist on this expedition, which surveyed the western and southern coast of South America and a few other Pacific Islands. During the voyage they took many stops to look around at the environment. Darwin wrote what he saw about the plants and animals in notebooks.()He collected many specimens that he used for experimentation and research (Biography).

    During the voyage he observed some of the different principles of botany, zoology, and geology. The voyage was life changing for Darwin because now his life would focus on his discoveries (Biography).
  • Returned to England

    Returned to England
    Darwin returned to England after 5 years with lots of information. Darwin began to use the information in his notebooks to develop a theory. He wrote the Journal of Researches which contained his findings. Along with this, the voyage really changed the way that Darwin viewed natural history. Theories began to develop in Darwin's head and they were contrary to what the popular view was. He tried to connect everything together to create a theory that couldn't be proved wrong by others (Biography).
  • Married Emma Wedgewood

    Married Emma Wedgewood
    Three years after returning from his voyage, Darwin married Emma Wedgewood. She was Darwin's first cousin and together they had 7 children. They also had 3 of their children die in infancy. Both of them had large inheritances from their families so they never had to hold jobs. Since Darwin never had a job, he worked tirelessly on science. He tried to put all of his discoveries together to form a theory. All of this energy spent paid off when everything started to piece together (Charles Robert).
  • Moved to Downe

    Moved to Downe
    Darwin and his wife decided to move to Downe. They had a country estate where Darwin spent most of his time. All of the energy he put into science began to take a toll on him. He wasn't able to leave his new estate that much because of this. Since Darwin didn't leave his estate much, he rarely entered in scientific debates ot defend his theory. Darwin lived in Downe until he fell ill and died (Charles Robert).
  • YMCA Founded

    YMCA Founded
    During this time England was very gloomy and full of despair. Young men came to the city to find new jobs and London was a very bleak place. George Williams, who was 22, was upset so him and 11 friends organized the first YMCA. It was originally a place for young men to escape the hazards of life and have Bible studies. The organization had a drive to reach out to all social classes and brighten up London a little bit. This was different for the people and the YMCA soon was worldwide (Founding).
  • Publicly Introduced Theory

    Publicly Introduced Theory
    At a Linnean Society meeting Darwin introduced his theory 4 years after being elected in. Some extracts of Darwin's work were shared along with his companion's work. His companion was named Wallace and they shared very similar ideas. Wallace never attended the meeting, but his work was still shared. Not many people knew how to react to this and some were very angry. His work was later all put together for the whole world to see (Charles Darwin).

    Published On the Origin of Species
    This book published by Darwin, was not very popular. It went against what most people believed during this time. The men of science and of the church rose up against it and others said it would destroy all cherished. The theory itself said that all living things descended from each other. Overtime they changed to their surroundings and new species developed from this natural process. Some people really began to dislike Darwin and there were large debates about his theory (Karp).
  • Abe Lincoln was Assassinated

    Abe Lincoln was Assassinated
    Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Booth at Ford's Theatre. John Booth was a Confederate who wasn't happy about the loss in the Civil War. He shot Lincoln while he was watching the performance. The whole country was in shock after realizing that their president was assassinated. Some businesses were closed flags across the country were lowered to half mass.He was buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery near his hometown and the people continued to mourn (Abraham).
  • US Buys Alaska

    US Buys Alaska
    The Americans and Russians were competing for power in the Asia-Pacific region. The countries realized that they were competing with the other country's explorers. Russia lacked a lot of the financial resources to support Alaska. After a defeat in the Crimean War the Russians lost interest in the area and offered it to the US. The 2 countries made a 7.2 million dollar deal, but the Americans didn't pay attention to Alaska. Finally a gold deposit was found and Alaska became a state (Purchase).
  • Death

    Death
    On this day Charles Darwin died in London at his family house. Darwin devoted many years to science and his scientific research. He began to be put in some distress towards his older years. Some problems were his abdominal pain, CVS, and many more. The cause of his death was looked at deeper and a very common idea was Chagas disease. This disease could of developed, for Darwin, while traveling the globe. His final words were,"I am not the least afraid to die (What Killed)."
