    National Women's Trade Union League
    The National Women's Trade Union League was created in 1903. The league consisted of female trade unionists, house residents, and social reformers that sought to improve the working conditions for female workers that resulted from the industrialization on women. The league was established in fighting against economic and cultural patterns that had restricted roles for women in the work force.

    Nine Western States Adopted Woman Suffrage Legislation
    By 1912, nine western states adopted woman suffrage legislation. Advocates for women's voting rights varied in strategies, some were determined to pass suffrage acts state by state, while others used tactics such as picketing and hunger strikes.

    Federal Suffrage Amendment Passed
    On May 21, 1919 the House of Representatives passed the Federal Suffrage amendment. Congress would then pass the amendment on June 4, 1919.

    19th Amendment Signed Into Law
    On August 18, 1920 the 19th Amendment was added to the United States Constitution. This gave American women the right to vote, and it reads:
    “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”

    The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 abolished segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. The act was first proposed by President John F. Kennedy, and ultimately ended up being signed into law by Kennedy’s successor, Lyndon B. Johnson.
