  • Period: 100,000 BCE to 10,000 BCE

    Paleolithic Age

    The Paleolithics were nomadic hunters and gatherers. They viewed themselves as equal people and lived an average of thirty-five years. Recorded as the first people to use fire and music. Paleolithics originated in Africa before spreading out to different parts of the world such as Eurasia and Southeast Asia. The Paleolithics are part of a significant time period known as the first stone age.

    Neolithic Age

    The Neolithics lived in permanent villages with domesticated plants and animals. It was an age of war and trade. Neolithics lived an average of twenty-five to twenty-eight years and started doing art such as pottery and weaving. The Neolithics lived in places such as central Asia, Mesopotamia, and Syria. The Neolithics are part of a significant time period known as the new stone age.

    Sumerian Civilization

    The Sumerian Civilization is one of four major civilizations in ancient Mesopotamia. Sumerians had the first city-states and lived in the Fertile Crescent. Along with innovations like the lunar cycle, the Sumerian Civilization is a significant time period because Sumerians invented Cuneiform writing.

    Ancient Mesopotamia

    Ancient Mesopotamia is called the "cradle of civilization because of the contributions of its four key civilizations. Mesopotamia is greek for "land between rivers" as it is located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. This time period is significant because the Mesopotamian people contributed to cities, agriculture, and writing.

    Ancient Egypt

    Ancient Egypt was protected by deserts, the Red Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. The Egyptians relied heavily on the Nile Rivers flooding to harvest crops. They were a Polytheistic people who believed human beings had two bodies, physical and spiritual. Ancient Egypt is a significant time period because of the cultures and religions which the Egyptians contributed.

    Ancient India

    Important parts of Ancient India's geography are the Hindu-Kush and Himalaya mountains as well as the Indus and Ganges Rivers in the northern plains. Ancient India is a significant timer period because of the important lifestyles India has contributed to History. The Harappa and Mohenjo Daro people had carefully planned cities that utilized indoor plumbing. The Aryans, however, lived in tribal groups and led a warrior life.

    Old Egyptian Kingdom

    The old kingdom is a significant time period because it was the first of three kingdoms in ancient Egypt. The old kingdom ruled through viziers and a bureaucracy. They viewed pharaohs as gods and built pyramids as the pharaohs tomb. The old kingdom also claimed divine power.

    The Great Pyramid is part of the Pyramids of Giza created by King Khufu. The pyramids are significant because they are a powerful symbol of the old kingdom. A Great Sphinx guards the Pyramids.

    The Akkadian Civilization is the second of four major civilizations in ancient Mesopotamia. They developed the first true empire and the postal system. The Akkadian Civilization is a significant time period because of the large Akkadian empire in Mesopotamia.

    Middle Egyptian Kingdom

    The middle kingdom is a significant time period because it was the second of three kingdoms in ancient Egypt. The middle kingdom was a period of expansion. Traders were sent Kush, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Crete. Pharaohs were expected to build public works and provide for public welfare. During this time, a canal was built to connect the Nile River and Red Sea.

    Assyrian Civilization

    The Assyrian Civilization is the third of four major civilizations in ancient Mesopotamia. They created mass amounts of iron weapons and cavalry. They also created a transportation network for the flow of ideas and goods. The Assyrian Civilization is a significant time period because the Assyrians grew military powers.

    Babylonian Civilization

    The Babylonian Civilization is the last of four major civilizations in ancient Mesopotamia. They built one of the seven wonders of the world, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The Babylonian Civilization is a significant time period because Hammurabi created the code of Hammurabi which was followed by the Babylonians.

    Shang Dynasty

    The Shang dynasty was the first major rulers of China. Their farming society ruled by aristocracy and they used bronze tools and weapons. The Shang Dynasty worshipped ancestors and consulted oracle bones. The Shang Dynasty is important for their developement of a writing form, use of bronze, and development of stratified government.

    Ancient China

    Two main rivers support Ancient Chinese civilizations, the Huang He and Chang Jiang. Mountains and deserts limit contact with western lands. The climate varies from north to south China.
    Ancient China is a significant time period because it gave rise to some of history's most powerful dynasties.

    Code of Hammurabi
    The Code of Hammurabi is one of the oldest codes in the world. Written on a stone in Cuneiform, the code consists of 282 different laws. It was written by the king of Babylon, Hammurabi, who ruled for forty years. This event is significant because the code helped unify an expanding empire. A second important goal of the code was to get rid of revenge.
  • Period: 1550 BCE to 1070 BCE

    New Egyptian Kingdom

    The new kingdom is a significant time period because it was the last of three kingdoms in ancient Egypt. The new kingdom was a period of economic prosperity. After Hyksos defeated the middle kingdom, Egyptians learned to use bronze, military skills, chariots, and more which made them the most dominant power in southwest Asia. The kingdom collapsed after the "sea peoples" attack in 1200 BCE.

    Zhou Dynasty

    The Zhou dynasty declared the Mandate of Heaven. They believed in the dynastic cycle where emperors would rule with divine power until their eventually decline and a new dynasty would rise. The Zhou dynasty was important because of their three major philosophies.

    Period of Warring States

    The Period of Warring States is a significant time period because it was a 180 year civil war. The war brought about many improvements such as the iron age in China. However, improvements in warfare extended the conflict. During this time was the development of Confucianism and filial piety.

    Qin Dynasty

    The Qin dynasty was a significant time period because it unified China. The Qin dynasty was a single monetary system. They had systems of roads and extended control to the Red River. The Grand Canal was also built during the Qin dynasty.

    Qin Begins Building The Great Wall
    The building of the Great Wall is a significant event because it protected China from the people to the north. Qin Shihuangdi linked pre-existing walls to the new walls and created the Great Wall of China. After Qin's death, others continued to formalize the wall. Unfortunately, the wall did not prevent future trouble with the north.
