Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott was an enslaved African American who was bought by an army doctor in Missouri. They then moved to Illinois which was a free state. Shortly after they moved to Wisconsin which was a state where slavery was banned. The doctor died in 1846 and anti-slavery lawyers helped Dred Scott sue for his freedom as a free man. He claimed he should be a free man because he once lived where slavery was not allowed. The decision in the court rocked the north he was still an enslaved person. -
Compromise Of 1850
Senator Henry Clay tried to find a way to solve all the madness going on in the south. To make both the South and the North happy he needed a plan that would allow slaves but also not be so hard on them. A debate broke out in Congress some people favored clays plan and others wanted Presidents Taylors plan. But shortly after President Taylor passed away and Vice President Millard agreed with Henry Clay so his idea was passed and that was the Compromise of 1850. -
Bleeding Kansas
Over 800 pro-slavery people attacked the town of Lawrence a campground for anti-slavery supporters. The attackers burned the free state hotel and many other homes. Many days after that many anti-slavery groups retaliated. John Brown was a man who believed God created him to end slavery in all the states. He vowed to strike fear in all of the slavery supporters. He killed over 5 slavery supporters and seized over 20. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Right after a law passed anti-slavery and pro-slavery groups rushed into Kansas. When it came time for elections a pro-slavery legislature was elected. There was only about 1500 people who lived there but over 6000 people from Missouri that came to vote for pro-slavery people. The anti-slavery didn't accept this so they armed themselves and held their own elections.This lead to many fights and deaths pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups couldnt even look at eachother without fighting. -
Election of Lincoln
In 1858 an election was held in Illinois. This caught the eye of many people because it was Stephen A. Douglas a democrat. Against a republican named Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln mentioned slavery during every debate which caused a lot hatred towards him from slave owners. -
Lincoln Douglas Debates
The debates of Lincoln and Douglas started during their presidential campaigns when they were fighting for who would become president. Lincoln would argue a lot about slavery whenever they would get into arguments but Douglas would just bring up how good it is for the growth of cotton and other precious goods for the south and how they relied on them. -
Raid on Harper's Ferry
The raid on Harper's Ferry was a effort from the south to take control of a northern camp in upward Virginia that contained many supplies for the North. They ended up beating the North and capturing Isreral Green Leader of the groups of the marines staying there. -
Lincoln Inaugural Address
Lincoln took this when he made his oath to be Americas president. Most of what he said he intended towards the south so they knew what his intentions where when he got into office. -
Attack on Fort Sumter
This attack was planned by the south because Lincoln put northern soldiers up into upper south Carolina and they saw that as a threat. They attacked the fort when no one expected a thing and caught northern soldiers off guard. This attack would start the Civil war.
