Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation Line of 1773 was a boundary created by the British to prevent Anglo-Americans (an American born in Europe or of European ancestry) from settling on French Land. This was because they didn't want Americans to provoke conflict with the native Americans and the French that lived there. Instead of settling anyway the Americans accepted the boundary and headed west. -
Sugar Act
The Sugar Act was passed on April 5, 1764 in order to stop the smuggling of sugar and molasses. The Sugar Act put taxes on sugar and molasses and was very harshly enforced. The colonies reacted to the Sugar Act by protesting. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was passed on March 22, 1765. The Stamp Act was an act that required the colonies required the colonists to help pay for the British troops for the Seven Years War by paying taxes. The "Stamp" was represented on many items. The colonists reacted to the Stamp Act by protesting violently. -
Quartering Act of 1765
The Quartering Act of 1765, was an act that gave the British Parliament to require American Colonies to pay for barracks for British troops. They also paid for supplies through taxes. The colonies responded to this by complying, but some colonies, such as New York did not. -
Declaratory Act
On March 18th, 1766, the Decalatory Act was passed because of the Stamp Act being repealed. The Declaratory Act gave Parliament the power to change or make laws for the colonial government. This Act was greatly important because it gave Great Britain total power to tax its citizens. The colonists did not try to rebel because of this, they were also not too upset. -
Townshend Act
The Townshend Acts were passed June 29 of 1767. The Townshend Acts was a chain of acts that put taxes on imports and exports for the American Colonies. The colonies responded to this Act by boycotting British Goods. -
Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre took place on March 5th, 1770. The Boston Massacre was a street fight between British soldiers and colonists. The soldiers went to town to enforce the laws on taxes and the colonists did not appreciate this. At the end of the fight several soldiers shot multiple colonists. The Boston massacre made many colonists realize they should stand up for themselves against British Parliament. -
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party took place on December 16,1773. The Boston Tea Party was a boycott that was held by the colonists to show and enraged they were at the British Parliament putting tax on tea. -
Quartering Act of 1774
The Quartering Act of 1774 was passed on May 24, 1774. The Quarting Act of 1774 was an act that gave the British Parliament the power to require all colonial governments to house soldiers if and when the barracks were full. Most colonies were very upset because of this act and thought it was unfair they had to spend their hard-earned money to feed and house soldiers. -
Intolerable Acts (Coercive Acts)
The Intolerable Acts were a series of four acts which were Massachusetts Government Act, Impartial Admin of Justice Act, Boston Port Act, and the Quartering Act. These acts essentially stopped all trade in Boston and punished all of Boston for the Boston Tea Party. The colonists reacted to the intolerable acts by coming together and protesting. -
Quebec Act
The Quebec Act was passed on June 22nd of 1774 but was passed May 1st of 1775. The Quebec act essentially allowed the people that were in Quebec to freely practice their religion and speak French. The colonists did not like this because they could not control that land or those people anymore. -
Currency Act
The Currency Act gave the British parliament the power to require the colonists to no longer issue paper currency, which made it so much harder for the colonist to support themselves, pay taxes, or pay debts. The colonists reacted to this act by protesting.
