  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was an anti-slavery novel that was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe and published on March 20th, 1852. This anti-slavery novel highlighted the negative aspects of slavery and how it was horrible. This novel was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South, that will eventually lead up to war, as her novel had influenced others to come out against slavery which in the end would cause the relations between the North and the South to worsen.
  • Republican Party

    Republican Party
    The Republican Party was formed on March 20th, 1854 by the Whigs Party in one of their meetings. The purpose of the Republican Party was to stop the expansion of slavery into western lands and American lands after the passing of the Kansas–Nebraska Act. The Republican Party was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South as the Republican Party did not support slavery and wanted to prevent the expansion of slavery.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    The Kansas Nebraska Act was passed on May 30th, 1854. This act was proposed by Stephen Douglas, which had addressed the expansion of slavery by outlining a popular sovereignty principle that said each territory's citizens would decide whether to allow slavery. The Kansas Nebraska Act was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South, that will eventually lead up to war, as it has raised the prospect of slavery spreading to other lands.

    The Bloody Kansas happened during 1855, as the results of the passing of the Kansas-Nebraska Act as the act had raised the prospect of slavery spreading to other lands. The Bloody Kansas was fierce conflict flared up repeatedly, mostly against between those who favored slavery and those who did not favor slavery. The Bloody Kansas was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South as it had worsened the relations between the North and the South, widening the division.
  • Brooks - Sumner lncident

    Brooks - Sumner lncident
    The Brooks-Summer incident happened on May 22nd, 1856 which was when Preston Brooks had attacked Charles Summer repeatedly with his cane. This incident had happened because Summers had spoke before the Senate on the contentious question of whether or not Kansas should be admitted to the Union as a slave state or a free state.This incident was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South as tremendously influenced how divided the nation was on the subject of slavery.

    The Election of 1856 happened on November 4th, 1856 with the candidates James Buchanan, John Charles Fremont, and Millard Filmore. This presidential election only consisted of 3 candidates and it had brought up the subject of slavery and the colonization of new lands. The election of 1856 was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South as during the elections, they continued to bring up the subject of slavery and colonization.
  • LeCompton Constitution

    LeCompton Constitution
    The LeCompton Constitution was a constitution that was published on October 19th, 1857. The document is a pro-slavery constitution, and was published with the intention of permitting slavery and the expansion of slaves in the state of Kansas. The LeCompton Constitution was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South as the constitution contained provisions that defended slavery, and it also contained a bill of rights that excludes free black people.
  • House Divided Speech

    The House Divided Speech was given on June 16th, 1858. This speech was addressed by Abraham Lincoln, and it was given to address slavery as a moral and political problem that endangered the United States' ability to exist. The House Divided Speech was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South as it reinforced the ties between republicans, moderates, and abolitionists and it had also motivated people to oppose the expansion of slavery.
  • Lincoln - Douglas Debates

    Lincoln - Douglas Debates
    The Lincoln-Douglas debate were a series of 7 debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas during 1858. These debates usually brought up slavery, and also brought up issues that were caused by slavery. It had also brought up what their stance on slavery were. The Lincoln-Douglas Debates were able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South as the topics and their stances on slavery had continued to have an impact on politics, and on the North and the South.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott was an affiliate of the Supreme Court case Dred Scott v. Sanford on March 6th, 1857. This case had discussed if Scott wad whether or not Dred Scott was a citizen of the United States, if Dred Scott was entitled to sue in federal court for the protection of his rights, and if Scott’s residence in free territory made him a free man. He was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South as he infuriated abolitionists. He later died on September 17th, 1858.
  • Harper's Ferry

    Harper's Ferry was an assault on October 16th, 1859 by a group of abolitionists that was led by John Brown. In this assault, they wanted to seize weapons there and also he also wanted to free slaves. Harper's Ferry was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South as it represented the brutality of the North.

    John Brown
    John Brown was an abolitionist leader who had died on December 2nd, 1859. In his mission of life, he had led the attack on Harper's Ferry, and he was also who was unafraid to pursue his goal of abolishing slavery. John Brown was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South as he wanted to abolish slavery from everywhere.

    The Election of 1860 happened on November 6th, 1860 and consisted of 4 candidates who where Abraham Lincoln
    John Breckinridge, John Bell, and Stephen Douglas. Out of all 4 candidates, Abraham Lincoln would be the one who would win the election of 1860, and with him winning, it had infuriated the South and those who owned slaves. The Election of 1860 was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South as due to it continuing to infuriate the South and slave owners.
  • Lincoln's 1" lnaugural Address

    Lincoln's 1" lnaugural Address
    Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Address was a letter that was presented and read out on March 4th, 1861. In this letter, he wanted to assure the slave owners, or to assure the Southern states, that he had no intentions of stripping them from their slaves and would rather try to maintain unity in the Union. Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Address was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South as the South continued to stray away from the Union.
  • Secession

    Secession was founded on May 20th, 1861. This would be a group officially leaving a political organization, and this would be when the 11 slave states (states where slavery was permitted) had officially left from the Union.. Secession was able to contribute to the growing division between the North and the South because of the problem with slavery and the power dynamics of the federal government.
