Napoleon marched into Russia thinking that he could crush their forces. Russia instead burnt their own cities and villages to the ground leaving no food or shelter for Napoleons army in the winter causing him to retreat. Less then 40,000 of the original 600,000 troops came back alive with Napoleon. -
Napoleon's Final Defeat
Napoleon and his army fought and lost a bloody defeat to the combined British and Prussian army. The allies who were victorious exiled him to the island St. Helena in the South Atlantic. He stayed exiled there for years until his death in 1821.
