Compromise of 1850
Congress adopts the Compromise of 1850 which admits California to the Union as a free state but does not forbid slavery in other territories acquired from Mexico. prohibits the sale of slaves in Washington, D.C. and includes a strict law requiring the return of runaway slaves to their masters. This event helped cause the War because People didnt agree with this compromise and wanted slavery present in these states. -

A Boston crowd rescues Shadrack, a fugitive slave, from court custody. This angered the southern slave owners because there fellow people were going agianst there fellow white man for fugitve slaves which they saw as betrayal. This influenced the war -
Harriet stowe
Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes Uncle Tom’s Cabin which sells 300,000 copies in a year and a million copies in 16 months. This book showed all fake stories that made slavery seem so cruel and pulled aprt the south and made northern states hate the suth even more when she dint even have the proper information aviable. She even was known as the little lady who started the war. -
Gadsden purchase
Gadsden Purchase. Mexico sold the United States 29,640 square miles of territory south of the Gila River for $10 million. This cused controversey on if these terotories would be in favor of the south or the north and if slavery wold be present there. This territory caused anger throughout the country. -
