  • Nation of Islam foundation

    Nation of Islam was founded in 1930 on July the 4th in Detroit, because of the belief, white men were missionary to the black men and replace the Islam with Christianity.
  • 1940s - Nation of Islam

    In 1940s ''messenger'' Elijah Muhammad started constructing the nations empire.
  • Nation of Islam - farmlands

    In 1945 started purchasing farmlands and founding first businesses and educational ventures.
  • Timespan - Nation of Islam

    During 1950s experienced a boom, because the depiciton of the "white devil" started to become relevant to a wider audience -> New members, e.g. Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali added visibility.
  • Nation of Islam - Louis Farrakhan

    In 1955 Louis Farrakhan joined Nation of Islam.
  • Nation of Islam - Martin Luther King

    By 1959, Martin Luther King was warning of “a hate group arising in our midst that would preach the doctrine of black supremacy.”
  • Nation of Islam - Violent Boom

    1960 was a second more violent (militant) boom.
  • Nation of Islam - Assassination

    Malcolm X’s 1965 assassination after his change of mind, for which many blamed NOI
    -> Talmadge Hayer, an NOI member, was arrested on the scene.
    -> Norman 3X Butler and Thomas 15X Johnson, also members of NOI, were charged in the case.
  • Black Panther Party for Self-Defense foundation

    Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was founded in 1966 by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton in Oakland, California and is a revolutionary, socialistic African American movement.
    - purpose: protect African American people from police brutality
  • Black Panther Party - First Draft

    the leaders of the Party write the first draft of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense 10-Point-Program.
  • Nation of Islam - Farrakhan

    Farrakhan was ascended to the position of national spokesman.

    • January, 1967: The first Black Panther Party office was opened.

    • March, 1967: The Black Panther Party publishes their first Newspaper "The Black Panther"

    • May, 1967: 30 armed Black Panther activists protest the Malford Act (bill that repealed a law allowing public carrying of loaded firearms) and achieve the Party's first national media attention

    • February, 1968: 33 Black Panther activists were shot by the local police and National Guard in South Carolina, 3 were killed.

    • March, 1968: Black Panther Party member Arthur Morris was shot and killed by the U.S. government
  • Black Panther Party - Huey Newton's Law Suit

    • September, 1968: Huey Newton is sentenced to 2 to 15 years in prison, charged with 1st degree murder, assault and kidnapping
  • Black Panther Party - Office

    • December, 1968: Black Panther Party office in Newark was bombed; police burnes food and clothes that was given to poor people during the holidays
  • Black Panther Party - FBCP

    • January, 1969: Free Breakfast for Children Program (FBCP) is established
  • Black Panther Party - Free Huey Protests

    • May, 1969: "Free Huey" rallies & protests to release Huey Newton out of prison; tens of thousands of people take part
  • Black Panther Party - Survival Programs

    • June, 1969: other Survival Programs are started to help oppressed people meet their basic necessities; programs include clothing distribution, free medical clinics, lessons on self-defense and first aid, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, etc.
  • Black Panther Party - Membership

    • l​​​​​​​ate 1960s: the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense has reached its peak; Panther membership exceeded to about 2,000

    • August, 1970: Newton is released from prison

    • Early 1974: Newton embarks on a major purge, expelling numerous top party leaders such as Bobby and John Seale; many other party members quit due to being loyal to Seale
  • Black Panther Party - Betty Van Patter

    1974: Brown hires Betty Van Patter as a bookkeeper, who goes missing in December of the same year. Huey Newton later allegedly confessed to a friend that he had ordered Van Patter's murder, and that Van Patter had been tortured and raped before being killed.
  • Black Panther Party - Huey Newton

    • August, 1974: Newton murders Kathleen Smith, a teenage prostitute, and flees to Cuba. Elaine Brown takes over the leadership.

    • Mid-to-late 1971: nationally, hundrets of Party members quit the Black Panther Party

    -1975: Brown increases the influence of women Panthers by placing them in more visible roles within the previously male-dominated organization.

    • In 1975 Elijah Muhammad died

    • In 1977 the NoI based on the original ideology of Elijah Muhammad again, too reach to a greater audience
  • Black Panther Party - Brown

    -1977: Brown resignes from the Party and flees to LA after the Black Panther Party critises the power of women and use violent against some of the women in the Party.

    • 1980: the Panther membership dwindles to 27

    • 1989: Huey Newton was murdered in the neighbourhood of Lower Bottoms, in West Oakland, California

    • In 1991 they released a “study” ordered up by Farrakhan and written by NOIs “Historical Research Department.” Titled The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews, the book uses isolated examples of Jewish merchants’ involvement in the purchase and ownership of slaves to place the onus of the slavery industry squarely on Jewish shoulders – a historical falsehood.

    • In 1998 Butler became head of the Nation of Islam’s Harlem mosque in New York

    • Later in 2016 during the presidential race Farrakhan expressed his liking for Donald Trump, because he helps the black community to seperate from white people

    • Farrakhan’s personal net worth, as of 2017, was over $3 million.

    • In August 2017, Farrakhan planned to make a speech over livestream at Kennington Park in London, but was denied, because he is still banned from the UK
