Indigenous migration
The Aboriginal Indigenous Australians migrated from India via the "Southern Route" around 50,000 years ago, and arrived in Australia around 45,000 years ago. -
1770 Australia was discovered by Capitan James cook
Captain James Cook, was a British explorer, navigator and cartographer who ultimately rose to the rank of captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, as well as the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. -
First Fleet arrived
Between 1788 and 1850 the English sent over 162,000 convicts to Australia in 806 ships. The first eleven of these ships are today known as the First Fleet and contained the convicts and marines -
Second Fleet arrives

George Bass and Matthew Flinders sail from Sydney and circumnavigate Tasmania, thus proving it to be an island.
In 1798 they sailed along the northern coast of Van Dieman's Land. They rowed up the Tamar River to near where Launceston is today and later climbed to the top of Mount Wellington which overlooks Hobart. They proved that there was water between Australia and Van Dieman's Land and it was named Bass Strait by Governor Hunter. -

Gold Rush 1850's
People from Europe, Asia and America came to the goldfields in the early 1850’s at the beginning of the great Australian Gold rush finding big deposits of gold in regions such as Bendigo and Ballarat in Victoria. -
1851 Victoria became a separate colony
In 1851 Australia saw the start of the gold rush with significant gold discoveries in both New South Wales and Victoria. As a result of the Gold Rushes, the European population of Victoria increased from 97,489 in 1851 to 538,628 in 1861 and the Victoria became a self-governing colony. -
Eureka Stockade 1854
After many years of paying ridiculous fees for mining in Australia, many miners where angry about the expenses as they were difficult to pay. In the early hours of Sunday the 3rd of December 1854, 100s of soldiers attacked the stockade, miners where quickly defeated after a 20 minute battle and 22 diggers and 5 soldiers were killed. Months later all diggers’ commands were met and new laws had taken place to make mining easier for the diggers. -
1855 Van Diemen’s Land was named Tasmania
Van Diemen's Land was renamed Tasmania to honour its original European discoverer, Abel Tasman. -
1859 Queensland had become a separate colony
In 1859, Queen Victoria signed Letters Patent, which declared that Queensland was now a separate colony from New South Wales. On 6 June 1859, the former Moreton Bay District was granted separation from New South Wales, and given the name of Queensland, with Brisbane as its capital city. -

Federation 1901- In 1901 Australia’s six British colonies came together to become a nation. . It was announced that on the 1st of January 1901 the six colonies of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and Tasmania would be the Commonwealth of Australia. -
