    6,000 Confederate soldiers surprised Union forces. Union troops were shot while making coffee and laying on their blankets. The Union troops got revenge the following day. The battle of Shiloh taught both sides a lesson. It also demonstrated how bloody the Civil War might become. This battle had a large impact on the war.
