    Post Civil War changes for African Americans
    The Civil War ended in 1865 which gave African Americans freedom from Slavery. Even post Civil War, tensions were high between white and blacks in the south. Even through this hard time a remarkable event took place in Virginia, African Americans were given the right vote for the first time. After holding the elections in October, Harper's Weekly magazine wrote and depicted the picture of "The First Vote" made by African Americans in Virginia.

    First Black Senator
    In the south African Americans were continuously being threaten, tortured and murdered when attempting to vote. Black codes were created to keep supremacy of African Americans. Despite painful setbacks in 1870 Hiram Revels became the first African American Senator ever in the country of the state of Mississippi.

    Black Women's Club
    Black Women's club began to grow in the 1890's. This club help promote black entrepreneurs and churches. For instance, Sarah Breedlove was helped by this club and became the first black woman self made millionaire by her hair product line under her rename of Madame CJ Walker.

    Ida B Wells shines light on truth
    Ida B Wells was a journalist and teacher and stood alone at during a hard time where it was dangerous. She stood up and wrote in a black newspaper against the wrongs of a black store owner and other blacks who were lynched for protecting themselves against white people attacking them in Memphis, Tennessee. Later she help put together the National Association of Colored Women.

    Atlanta Compromise delivered by Booker T. Washington
    Booker T Washington delivered a heart felt speech in Atlanta, Georgia to a largely white southern crowd in hopes to ease the mind of white southerns regarding African American's status. This speech became very monumental because Booker T Washington explains that African Americans will be successful and happy by their hard work and not fight for total equality.
  • The Great Migration 1910-1920

    The Great Migration 1910-1920
    African Americans being oppressed in the south gave rise to the Great Migration to the north were there was better job opportunities and potential for growth. With news spreading of such places in the north, over 350,000 African Americans moved north to places like Harlem, New York which turned into The Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance help establish and grow the African American culture.

    World War 1: Harlem Hellfighters
    With African Americans beginning to flourish World War 1 breaks out and gives a chance for African Americans to stand up for their country. A famous infantry known as the Harlem Hellfighters fought and stayed in France longer than any unit. The soldiers that returned were honored with war metals and a welcome coming parade when they returned to New York.
