Proclamation of Neutrality
The Proclamation of Neutrality was an announcement issued by President George Washington in May 1793, it declared the nation neutral in the conflict between France and Great Britain. Any American caught providing assistance to one of these country during war, would find themselves in legal trouble with our government. -
XYZ Affair
This was a confrontation between the United States and France, and the cause of the undeclared war called the Quasi-War. It Started when France(at war with Great Britain) issued an order allowing for the seizure of American merchant ships. President Adams sent people to France to negotiate with France,but they refused to meet with them.Instead they demanded the Americans to pay a personal bribe in return for a meeting. -
Convention of 1800
A treaty between the United States of America and France to settle their problems related to the Quasi-War. The Quasi-War, was waged primarily in the Caribbean,and had been going on since the American delegation to France had been told that America had to pay $250,000 to see the French ambassador, not even negotiating.This incident was known as the XYZ Affair. -
Louisiana Purchase
The purchase by the United States from France of the huge Louisiana Territory in 1803. President Thomas Jefferson ordered the purchase negotiations, fearing that the French, then led by Napoleon, wanted to establish an empire in North America. -
Embargo Act of 1807
This Act was sponsored by President Thomas Jefferson and enacted by Congress. It was a general embargo that made any exports from the United States illegal . Their goal was to force Britain and France to respect American rights during the Napoleonic Wars. The U.S. wanted to remain neutral and trade with both sides, but neither side wanted the other to have the American supplies. This was not good for the American economy. -
War of 1812
A conflict, lasting for two and a half years, between the U.S.A. and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and its North American colonies and its American Indian allies. The war resolved many remaining issues from the American Revolutionary War, but involved no boundary changes. -
Treaty of Ghent
Signed in the Flemish city of Ghent, was the peace treaty that ended the War of 1812 between the U.S.A.and the United Kingdom of Ireland and Great Britain. The treaty restored relations between the two nations. -
Monroe Doctrine
This is a US foreign policy that stated that further efforts by European nations to colonize land or interfere with states in North or South America would be viewed as acts of aggression, requiring U.S. intervention. The doctrine also noted that the United States would not interfere with existing European colonies nor meddle in the concerns of European countries.
