Time Line

  • March 2004:

    Facebook begins allowing users from other US universities to join in. It started with Boston universities, then with the Ivy League, and later with all US universities.
  • June, 2004:

    Facebook occupies its first investment from Peter Thiel for 500,000 US dollars.
  • February 4, 2004:

    Mark Zuckerberg started a social network called “The Facebook” while he was in the university of Harvard. He launched it first to be a private website for the college students there and it was the only social network available in Harvard at the time. Within 24 hours of the launch, 1, 200 Harvard students had signed up in Facebook and in the following month, almost half of the undergraduates in Harvard university had a Facebook profile.
  • October 2005

    Facebook launched its photo sharing system with no storage restrictions. Through that, people were able to add profile photos and images on their walls without space limits.
  • December 2005:

    Facebook produces the feature of tagging friends and family in photos.
  • August 23, 2005:

    The domain Facebook.com was given to Facebook after the address was purchased for $200,000.
  • September 2006:

    Facebook begins allowing anyone over 13 to be able to create a Facebook account.
  • February 9, 2009:

    Facebook gave birth to the Like button where people can add likes to each other’s posts and ads.
  • July 6, 2011:

    Facebook partners with Skype which permits it to add free video calls to its services. This also allowed any Skype users to ue their Facebook account to know which of their friends had a Skype account.
  • September 26, 2013:

    Facebook started allowing people to go back to edit their posts or comments after publishing them.
  • January 2014:

    Facebook started including “trending topics”, showing its users the most frequently visited and viewed topics and posts.
  • February 24, 2016:

    Facebook releases five more reactions beside “like”. Those are “love”, “haha”, “wow”, “sad”, and “anger”. Each user though was allowed to add one reaction at most to a post.
  • August 22, 2016

    Facebook introduces “Facebook Notes”, which is a word processing tool for writing in the full length of the post. It allows the use of tags and pictures too in the post.
  • May 3, 2017

    Facebook offered reactions for the comments published onto a post. Before, this date you could have clicked a like or any other form of reaction just onto a post but not onto a comment added. However, adding a reaction onto a message sent through Messenger was available before May 3, 2017.
