Fort Laramie Treaty
This treaty was signed between US government officials and representatives of Indian tribes. The details of the treaty was that the Native Americans would give the US a safe passage and allow them to build in their territories. The Natives were given a lot of money each year. This led to the Chivington Massacre. -

Comstock Lode
When silver ore was discovered under what is now Virginia City, Nevada. Many miners and mining companies rushed there to become rich. Mining camps began to spring up, these were places of tremendous wealth. This discovery led to rapid settlement of Nevada and San Francisco, it also led to advancements in mining technology. When the mines began to run out in 1874, the mines declined. -

Construction of the Transcontinental Railroad
The Transcontinental Railroad was made by the east and west connecting their halves of the railroad. The western half, the Central Pacific Railroad, started at Sacramento, California.The eastern half, the Union Pacific Railroad, started at Omaha, Nebraska. Then these halves met at Promontory Point, Utah. This railroad united the nation and made westward expansion more possible. -
Chivington Massacre (Sand Creek Massacre)
About 700 men of the Colorado militia attacked a small village of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians. This militia force was led by John Chivington. There they masacred about 200 friendly and harmless Indians, about two-thirds of whom were women and children. This led to even more unsettlement between natives and US citizens. It also marked the ending of the Indians' old way of life. -

The Cattle Kingdom
The Cattle Kingdom was started with the help of the spread of railroads. Cattle were transported from western and southern states, mainly Texas, because of the highcattle prices in the east. The cattle drives were profirable for cowboys, but very dangerous. Many cowboys were killed on cattle drives.The cattle kingdom ended because of many reasons; it was because of overgrazing, overproduction, harsh winters, and summer droughts. The Cattle Kingdom only lasted for 20 years. -
Barbed Wire is invented
Barbed wire was invented by Lucien B. Smith in Kent, Ohio. Barbed wire was very important to farmers. Farmers' crops were trampled by cattle drives, and because of this they also were rivals to cowboys. Barbed wire stoppped cattle from getting on to and trampling farmers' crops. Barbed wire eventually ended cowboys and cattle drives because barbed wire blocked their paths -
Battle of Little Bighorn (Custer's Last Stand)
Colonel George A. Custer took a column of about 600 soldiers to Little Bighorn Valley in Indian Territory. They were there to protect miners when they came upon a camp of nearly 2,000 Indian warriors. Custer divided up and attacked with 225 men. Custer and all of his troops were killed. Right after the Indians were defeated by the US army. -
Oklahoma Land Rush
The US government opened up the once Indian lands of Oklahoma. You could get this land for really cheap or for free. People from the borders of Texas and Arkansas could race to get to unclaimed land first. This event caused the rapid developement of towns in the West. Many people were also killed. -
