He also got a AM and PhD degree in physics in 1946 and 1949. This three years of academic freedom were crucial for him to switch to history and philosophy of science. -

Thomas taught a history of science course at Harvard from 1948 until 1956 then decided to leave Harvard. Then going to teach at the University of California, Berkeley in both the philosophy department and history as well. Where he then was named Professor of the history of science. -
