    Early Life and Career

    Thomas Kuhn was born 18 July 1922. After graduating high school, Kuhn went on to obtain a B.S. in physics from Harvard University in 1943 and proceeded to work on radar for both Harvard and the U.S. Government during World War II. Following the war, Kuhn returned to Harvard and obtained a master's degree in physics in 1946 and a PhD in physics, which was completed in 1949.

    Teaching at Harvard

    Between 1949 and 1956, Kuhn taught a class at Harvard University and became exposed through it to the history of science. This marked a shift in Kuhn's interest from physics to history of science and led him down the path to writing his greatest work.

    The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962)
    Kuhn's best known work, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, was published in 1962. Kuhn theorized science as a series of paradigms which eventually fail to answer questions, leading to a paradigm shift. Additionally, Kuhn held each paradigm as incommensurable, standing alone and could not be measured against each other.

  • Kuhn dies (1996)

    Thomas Kuhn died in 1996. Following the publishing of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Kuhn went on to be a professor of philosophy at Princeton in 1964 and Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1979 to 1991.
